Antique Noon Check Brass Tags: MARION STEAM SHOVEL Co; Matched (Tool Checks)
This is a set of 3 identically matched and very nice 1-1/16" antique noon checks (very much like a tool checks), numbered 1367, from the MARION STEAM SHOVEL COMPANY. The backs are blank.
The Marion Steam Shovel Company, founded in 1884 in Marion OH, company built steam shovels. Business boomed during the late nineteenth century with the advent of railroad construction. With the United States’ acquisition of the Panama Canal Zone in 1903, the federal government turned to Marion to provide the steam shovels necessary for the canal’s construction. Marion became known as the “city that built the Panama Canal,” thanks to the Marion Steam Shovel Company.
By the 1920s, steam power became less popular, and the Marion Steam Shovel Company changed its name to the Marion Power Shovel Company.  Marion's shovels were used primarily for road building and strip mining and were instrumental in building the Hoover Dam and the Holland Tunnel.
