Sergio Vacchi was born on 1st April 1925 in Castenaso. He abandoned his law studies to pursue his passion for painting. Self-taught artist, in 1951 he held his first solo exhibition at Milan at the prestigious Galleria del Milione. After a period close to post-Cubism, between 1956 and 1962, he embraced informal art.In the early 1960s, Vacchi moved to Rome, where he began a cycle of gouaches and paintings known collectively as Il Concilio (that is to say The Council), which raises great controversies with the Roman Catholic Church because of their grotesque and sometimes blasphemous representation of the Church2. When in 1964, Vacchi was invited to the Venice Biennale, the Patriarch of Venice forbids Catholics to visit his room. After some clues present in Il Concilio, Vacchi embraces a new artistic movement, known as Nuova Figurazione (Nouvelle Figuration), the first significant example of which is Morte di Federico II di Hohenstaufen. In the following years, the painting cycles Galileo Galilei semper ... and Pianeta In the 1990s, Vacchi devoted himself to cycles of portraits and self-portraits, and more particularly to portraits of Greta Garbo 2. In 1997, he moved to Siena, where he founded the foundation Fondazione Vacchi. He stopped painting at the end of the 2000s, because of the Parkinson disease that affects it.
