The Georgian Dancers of Israel, a company of émigrés from Soviet Georgia that gave its first performance in 1973, made its local debut Saturday night May 14, 1977 at the Felt Forum.
Ilia Namtalashvili, the troupe's founder and artistic director, has done a remarkable job, considering the short time the group has been in existence and the fact that although a large number of his performers may he Georgian, they are not all necessarily professional dancers like himself.
No, this company is obviously not equivalent to the famed Georgian State Dance Company from the Soviet Union that first thrilled audiences here in 1959‐60. Yet all the essential images of the ancient dances of Georgia were present in this program.
