    Description

    Lot #EHEX3 - This i
s an antique Gold Milled Locket Photo Case or Box crafted from an original 1888-p Gold Double Eagle Coin.   It was expertly milled into a flawlessly functional gold hinged box long ago.  The work appears very old yet exceptionally intact an
d fully functional.   A simple bit of pressure on the edge of the word "States" on the reverse pops the totally hidden mechanism and opens the case.   Everything appears to be exactly as originally crafted and really cleanly functional as we would all hope to find.
This was originally a Christmas holiday gift created by the "Kenduskeag Trust Company of Bangor, Maine" c1888.  The original gift box has a Christmas holly decoration on the front and that provenance
    originally
printed on the base of the green satin lined gift box.
The obverse of the gold coin looks very nice as shown, with exceptional details.   The reverse is milled smooth and reflective with the firmly mounted rotating dual pin mechanism.  It all appears to be gold.   We have never cleaned or handled it in any way other than gloved exposure for these photos.  There is an ancient photo of an old woman inside, behind the old round glass, framed by an finely designed framework affixed with jewelers screws.  We have never opened the inner mounting where the photo is.
The pin mechanism rotates and stays open, and also closes perfectly as it was when crafted.  It is in really great condition in this regard with no discernible damage or repairs.
There are no maker marks visible.
The 1888-p Double Eagle is impressive on both sides.  The original coin would have contained 96.13% gold and weighed 33.44 grams.  The coin is 34mm as original.
One upper corner edge of the box has a surface split (just 1/8") and there is a bit of surface smudge to the box from its early decades of being gently handled.  It has been stored in air-tight museum conditions for the past 50+ years.
We acquired an amazing private collection of over a dozen gold exonumia pieces.   This collection including this lot were acquired and preserved over five decades.  We will be listing them here.  This is the third lot in the series.

Please note that we do not accept bids from those with recent negatives, zero feedbacks, or other performance issues, in order to maintain a level field for all as we do a fair number of actual auctions.  If you have fewer than 10 feedbacks, it is important to please contact us via the eBay message system to confirm your intention to pay when you bid.  If we have not heard from you and you have fewer than those 10 feedbacks, we will cancel your bid and ask that you do confirm first.  Please always pay promptly, (within 72 hours).  We always are prepared to ship promptly!
Returns are accepted and processed with detailed examination upon receipt.   The item must be photographed before packing (with the packing materials to be used) to show it is identical, with those photos uploaded to eBay before fully insured and tracked return shipping (paid by buyer).  The item must be received here to be a return, so be sure to insure fully as we do when shipping.   Due to this item's rare one-of-a-kind status, the item must be received in the same condition as shown and shipped in order for any refund to be processed.   This piece has been maintained for over five decades to museum standards.   If the item becomes altered in any way, then the item will be returned to the buyer without any refund issued.   It is agreed that it may not be returned to EarthHunt if altered, if the screws or photo frame are disturbed,  (as we have never opened the photo mounting area with the screws).   To open it farther than shown in these images is strictly at the buyer's risk as no one has done so in over 50 years (perhaps well over 100 years), thus by doing that, it is agreed by the buyer that it may not then be returned.  Any return must be done without the piece being  "cleaned", or "polished" or "unscrewed" or otherwise handled so that restoration of any kind would be required to return it to exactly what is shown and described in this listing.
