    Description

RARE 21" Antique early Schoenhut Carved Hair Doll
with Blue Bow & Intaglio Eyes
    "All-Wood Perfection Art Doll"
This doll has the early incised mark on her back that reads:
Schoenhut Doll, Pat. Jan. 17-11 USA Foreign Countries.
She stands 21 inches tall, has carved hair and a carved blue bow in the back of her head.  She has metal jointed limbs with tight joints and two holes in each foot for posing on a Schoenhut doll stand.
The face paint is recently done.  Some "repaint" was removed from her body.
Her torso shows a lot of her original color I think, though some repaint remnants still remain.  Her arms and legs show some original paint, some original wood and a thin layer of lighter pink repaint from years ago. On her blue bow in the back there are remnants of pink that show up as original color in UV light which may have been a "factory" repaint... so maybe she was also a pink bow doll for a few years.  I believe the blue in her eyes is original.
I am showing her in the outfit in which I found her which is a nice antique handmade doll dress, underskirt and undies.  It has lace at the sleeves and neckline and buttons up the back and beautiful embroidery around the waist, collar, hem of skirt and both sleeves.  From the colors in the fabric I believe the dress used to be a pretty light blue but has faded.  Waist of the dress is too small for her so last button in the back doesn't reach.
But the measurements of the lace trimmed underskirt seem perfect for this doll fitting her waist perfectly. Her undies seem to be the right length but are attached by a thin ribbon that was found sewn through the fabric to tie at the waist.
She has brand new white Schoenhut reproduction tie shoes with holes in the bottom.  She also has a pair of long white brand new socks that I will include but did not photograph that were made just for her. And her button is a reproduction, as well.
Her full history is unknown but she shows signs of play, wear, long years and is very loved.
This is very much a reluctant sale.  She is one my most favorite finds.
    History:
Albert Schoenhut made wooden toys and dolls in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania between 1872-1925.  The dolls were distributed by Strasburger, Pfeiffer & Co. as well as George Borgfeldt, and A.S. Ferguson.
His amazing spring-jointed doll patent was granted in 1911 and you can find this doll as a #21/102 in an archived online 1915 Schoenhut Company catalog that can be find at the site:
