    Description

    Lot #EHEX2 - This i
s an antique Gold Pin crafted from an original .875 Gold 8 Escudo Coin dated the first year of the 8 Escudo of this series, 1791.   It was expertly milled into a flawlessly functional gold pin long ago.  The work appears very old yet exceptionally intact an
d fully functional.   The dual pins rotate upwards as shown on a mount that appears to be exactly as originally crafted and really cleanly functional as we would all hope to find.   The coin reads:
    "
    CAROL IIII D G HISP ET IND R" - "1791
    ".
This pin is the historically renowned gold 8 Escudos coin of King Charles IV of Spain, dated 1791.  Many of these coins were Spanish or pirate treasure accosted from the ships of the King of Spain.  They were struck in the colonies of South America including Colombia and Peru, and also Mexico.  The Spanish colonized that region and coins were minted there at the sites of the new sources of gold. These gold coins were called escudos.  A name that echoes in history was assigned to these Escudos.  They were also well known as "Spanish doubloons".
The obverse of the gold coin looks very nice as shown, with exceptional details.   The reverse is milled smooth and reflective with the firmly mounted rotating dual pin mechanism.  It all appears to be gold.   We have never cleaned or handled it in any way other than gloved exposure for these photos.
The pin mechanism rotates and stays open, and also closes perfectly as it was when crafted.  It is in really great condition in this regard with no discernible damage or repairs.
There are no maker marks visible.
The 1791 Eight Escudo gold coin with the armored bust of King Charles IV of Spain (1788-1808) is impressive from the front.  The original coin would have contained 23.625 grams of gold content.  The coin was originally 37mm in diameter before being utilized and altered long ago to craft this jewelry piece.
