FUTURITIES:
Troy, Missouri Breeder, W.E. Newberry, D.V.M., bought his first Saddlebred in 1957. He showed her successfully for a few years, then bred her. Newberry’s first futurity was the yearling championship at the 1963 Illinois State Fair with her first colt.
“There were 29 yearlings in the class, and most of them belonged to big breeders!” he remembers.
“It was like a Third World Country with only one athlete winning the Olympics.”
Although he raises only one or two foals a year, and does most of the work himself, four generations of Dr. Newberry’s Hillcrest Saddlebreds have won halter and performance titles in futurities from Missouri, Iowa, Illinois and Ohio. Four daughters of the 1963 Illinois Futurity winner have produced World’s Champions, and one became a three-gaited World Champion herself. That Stallion’s replacement, a champion 1992 model, is already siring futurity champions with the “Hillcrest” moniker.
And:
The Man that Time Won’t Forget
